So here is my planning thus far for the dialogue test I am doing with the cowboy character I have previously posted. This will A) help me nail down some more of the design B) help with working out some character and C) Get me animating in 2d! This will actually be my first 2d dialogue test ever... kind of rediculous, but nothing that I have worked on in 2d had any dialogue! This will be a huge learning experience so lets see how this goes... but here are the tumbnails and notes:

Well, I will try to keep this up and get a pose test/blocking up soon. By the way, the clip I am animating to is from There Will Be Blood. I'll post it next time!

there's a really good breakdown of this shot on david bordwell;s blog.

his analysis is mostly on the composition, but the frame grabs really capture lewis' amazing subtlety (in this scene, at least). A weight shift here, a lean there, a hand.

hooray for 2d.

oh sweet, thanks man, that's pretty awesome! The challenge for this becomes trying something different with the read, when Lewis already has delivered such a great performance with the line... At least I picked a shot with his back to the camera, or I would be tempted to use a lot of the acting that he already did!

Hi Andrew,
I found your blog perusing other animators and artists' blogs, and I just wanted to tell you that I think you're an excellent artist. I really really like the Western dude you've created, very nicely designed.

Can't wait to see more!

This is one of my new favorite blogs!

TWBB was definitely my favorite film of last year and Daniel Plainview my favorite performance! The voice he created for the character haunted me after I saw it. I am on the edge of my seat to see what you do with it!!

Looks like you can't use the "I'm not much of a designer" line anymore because this one is beautiful!
